Large-Flange vs. Dome-Head Blind Rivets: What to Specify

When ordering blind rivets, the body diameter and length are only part of the specification. The head also needs to suit the material surface, available space and appearance of the assembly. For wholesalers, confirming the head style helps avoid comparing quotations for different products.

What Is the Difference?

A dome-head blind rivet has a raised, rounded head. A large-flange design has a wider head that provides a larger contact area on the accessible side of the joint. That wider bearing area can be relevant when evaluating thin, soft or brittle materials.

The wider head is not, by itself, proof that the complete joint will carry a higher load. Check the specification of the exact rivet and the requirements of the assembly.

Compare More Than the Head Diameter

Do Not Confuse Flange Size with Grip Range

The flange sits against the visible surface. Grip range describes the thickness of material that the selected rivet is designed to fasten. A larger flange does not automatically mean a wider grip range, a longer body or a different hole size.

If you are replacing an existing rivet, send both the rivet dimensions and the joint thickness. A photograph can show the head style, but cannot establish all dimensions or identify the body and mandrel materials.

What If the Surface Must Be Flush?

State the flush-surface requirement explicitly rather than assuming a dome-head or large-flange rivet will sit flush. A countersunk design and the corresponding hole preparation may need to be evaluated against the assembly drawing.

A Useful Quotation Request

Include the head style, flange diameter if specified, body diameter and length, grip range, body and mandrel materials, quantity, packaging and destination country. If any detail is uncertain, mark it for confirmation rather than treating a visually similar rivet as an exact replacement.
